What is nanoscience?

The word itself is a combination of nano, from the Greek “nanos” (or Latin “nanus”), meaning “dwarf”, and the word "science." Nano refers to 10-9 power, or one billionth. In these terms it refers to one billionth of a meter, or a nanometer (nm), which is on the scale of atomic diameters. For comparison, a human hair is about 100,000 nanometers thick!

Nanoscience is the study of atoms, molecules, and objects whose size is on the nanometer scale (1 - 100 nm).

What is the Nanoscience Classroom?

Nanoscience Instruments is committed to bringing nanotechnology education to the classroom. With computers and smartphones getting smaller and faster, there comes a greater need to teach current students about the nanoscale. To keep pushing the frontier of technological growth, students need the opportunity to learn skills and gain experience with the tools used in industry today.

The nanotechnology market will continue to expand for the foreseeable future. This growth comes from more than electronics and computer chips. From forensics to plastics to energy to health, the smallest size dimensions are becoming the most important features. Nanotechnology is promising answers to many types of problems in all fields of work.

This great movement to smaller sizes requires students to dive into the micro and nano worlds head first. Interacting with small and unseen features helps develop problem-solving skills. Students are amazed to watch the details of an ant’s mouth come into focus as you control the electron microscope for the first time. It is akin to learning to ride a bicycle. Having the power to drive an instrument in your hands can seem daunting, but zooming in on minute details is as thrilling as zooming down the street on a bike.
