3D rendering of an easyScan STM image of Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG). The "bumps" represent individual carbon atoms. The distance across the entire image is 2 nm (20 angstroms).

The peaks are interpreted by the current from the sample to the tip - in this case the high points represent less than 0.5 nA (nanoAmps).

To the left: 2D scan used to create the 3D animation. Scan size is 2nm x 2 nm.

Image is courtesy of Nanosurf Ag.

The 3D animation was rendered with the SPIP software.
