Phenom Curriculum Implemented in Various Institutions
In the last edition of our Nanoadvisor, we introduced the low cost, easy-to-use Phenom Desktop Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). In this edition’s Nanoadvisor, we talked to Dr. Dorothy Moore, at Chemeketa Community College, about the curriculum she developed for the Phenom SEM. Dr. Moore was the project manager of a three-institution, Department of Energy-funded project which involved many teachers and students in various universities, high schools and museums across the country. The curriculum consists of extensive lab modules, elucidating vital concepts from chemistry, biology, bioengineering, material sciences and textile engineering. Dr. Moore is happy to share all the materials with the entire Phenom-user community and you can read more about her work in the Nanoadvisor.

PROGRAM FOCUS

Modern Approach to Physical Chemistry at Texas A&M
We interviewed Dr. James Batteas, chemistry professor at Texas A&M, who uses the Nanosurf easyScan 2 Scanning Tunneling Microsope (STM) to teach undergraduates in his university. Dr. Batteas, who has extensive research experience with the STM, scaled down a research project to fit the requirements of an undergraduate lab. He felt the need to do so because he found a distinct disconnect between his physical chemistry lectures and the outdated lab experiments. He wanted his students to visualize the quantum mechanics they learnt about in lectures in order for them to develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Dr. Batteas’ work is soon to be published in the Journal of Chemical Education!

EDUCATIONAL PRODUCTS & EVENTS

Call to Contribute Curriculum
We would like to thank Dr. Moore and Dr. Batteas for sharing their work with us and the community of nano-educators. We would also like to invite other educators to submit their curricula in order to enrich the scientific community. The materials would be reviewed by our technical writers and we will feature your story in the Nanoadvisor!

The New and Improved Phenom
Encouraged by the tremendous success of the Phenom in the education community, we decided to take it a step further and add Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) to the system. You can now get outstanding imaging capabilities and elemental analysis in one compact, easy-to-use system.

Conference Watch
Finally, we would like to announce the 2012 Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE), where Nanoscience Instruments will be giving a talk at a symposium hosted by Dr. Kurt Winkelmann. Find out more about the symposium and our talk, in the Nanoadvisor.
