Scanning Tunneling Microscope

Trax scanning tunneling microscope

Trax scanning tunneling microscope (STM) for education

The following lab modules are available for the STM:

  • Obtaining Atomic Resolution: This lab unit introduces STM technique and uses it to obtain real space atomic resolution images of conductive surfaces. PDF-icon_16p.png
  • Understanding Local Electronic Properties: The tunneling spectroscopy of the STM mode is employed to examine local density of state (LDOS) of the surface. PDF-icon_16p.png
  • Self-Assembled Monolayers: Using the STM to study the height profiles and measuring single molecule conductance of mercapto alkanes self-assembled on a gold surface. PDF-icon_16p.png
  • STM Teachers Manual: Provides a great overview of the background and theory behind how the STM works. Also covers sample preparation and other aspects of imaging. PDF-icon_16p.png

Note: Most of the curriculum is written with the easyScan 2 STM. If you have a NaioSTM, all the materials still apply to your system. Both the STMs have identical electronics and the difference is only in the external design of the unit.
