Scientific Instrumentation Service Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Field Service Engineer to join our organization, specializing in the maintenance, repair, and optimization of Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEMs) and other advanced scientific instrumentation. This remote position, based in the Chicago, IL area, requires extensive travel (up to 75%) to customer sites. The successful candidate will possess a robust technical background, proficiency in precision scientific equipment, and a commitment to delivering superior customer service and innovative solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintenance and Repair:

Perform routine preventive maintenance, diagnose complex technical issues, and execute repairs on SEMs and other high-tech scientific instruments to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime.

Customer Support:

Provide exceptional on-site and remote technical support, addressing customer inquiries with professionalism and resolving issues promptly and effectively.

Preventive Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

Conduct system checks, calibrations, and diagnostics on the following equipment:

  • Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEMs) and associated microscopy systems
  • Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) devices
  • Electrospinning and Nanofiber Production Systems
  • Other advanced scientific instrumentation

Training:

Deliver comprehensive training to customers on the operation, maintenance, and best practices for SEMs and related equipment to optimize system performance.

Documentation:

Maintain meticulous and accurate service records, including detailed reports on installations, repairs, and maintenance activities.

Collaboration:

Work closely with supplier engineering teams and customer support personnel to address technical challenges and enhance instrument functionality.

Compliance:

Strictly adhere to safety standards, company protocols, and customer-specific requirements during all service activities.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline. Equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Experience:

  • 3 – 5 years of field service experience in high-tech environments, with demonstrated expertise in maintaining and troubleshooting complex scientific instrumentation.

  • In-depth knowledge of electron microscopy, vacuum systems, and precision instrumentation is highly desirable.

Technical Skills:

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and software issues in complex systems, with a focus on SEMs.

  • Proficiency in SEM operation and maintenance procedures.

  • Experience utilizing diagnostic tools, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, and related equipment.

Travel:

Willingness to travel up to 75% of the time, including overnight stays and occasional international assignments.

Interpersonal Skills:

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to foster effective interactions with customers and team members.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities with meticulous attention to detail.

  • Capacity to work independently in a remote setting while maintaining accountability.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift and maneuver equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and work in cleanroom environments as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in the repair and maintenance of high-value scientific equipment.

  • Comprehensive understanding of electrical and mechanical systems.

  • Familiarity with high vacuum technology is advantageous.

  • Proven expertise in troubleshooting and diagnostics for scientific instrumentation.

  • Knowledge of advanced analytical techniques, such as Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) or Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD).

  • Advanced proficiency in software troubleshooting, installation, configuration, and maintenance, including experience with diagnostic tools and remote support applications (e.g., TeamViewer).

  • Strong commitment to customer advocacy.
